Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level

A US grade-level score. 8.0 means a typical 8th-grader can read it.

Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level (FKGL) converts readability into US school grade equivalents. It was commissioned by the US Navy in 1975 to evaluate technical manuals. The formula is: 0.39 ร— (words/sentences) + 11.8 ร— (syllables/words) โˆ’ 15.59. It's the default readability score displayed by Microsoft Word and many word processors. A grade of 8 means an average 13โ€“14 year-old should understand the text. Most popular novels score between 5 and 9.
